CONTROL PROGRAMME FOR POULTRY RED MITE FROM SOREX |
A programme to control poultry red mite was outlined at the
British Pig & Poultry Fair by pest control specialists, Sorex
Limited. A combination of the proven residual insecticide Littac,
which may be in-tank mixed with the new product Optimite, followed
by the new product Decimite, encompasses a rotational programme
which should control poultry red mite for at least 12 weeks.
Egg producers have two basic options according to Lesley LeQuesne,
Sorex' entomologist: a programme for empty houses and one for
established infestations during the crop cycle.
"For empty houses, prior to a new crop cycle and after thorough
cleaning, Littac should be applied," she said. "This is a highly
active residual insecticide that not only controls poultry red
mite, but also litter beetles and other crawling insects. It
is fast acting and persistent for up to four months and its
performance can be optimised by adding new Optimite as an in-tank
mix".
"Optimite has been purpose developed to be in-tank mixed with
Littac and contains no pesticide. The combination of Littac
and Optimite is very effective at controlling clumps of mites
and penetrating into harbourages, cracks and crevices."
Stage two of the control programme for empty houses is to use
new Decimite as a blanket treatment when mites begin to reappear.
The timing of this will vary according to factors such as the
severity of the infestation and the thoroughness of the previous
treatment, but will normally be at least three weeks after the
previous treatment, Lesley LeQuesne explained.
For established infestations, or during a crop cycle, the programme
is slightly different. After removing all eggs, discrete clumps
of mites should be treated using Littac and Optimite. As before,
this is then followed with a blanket treatment of Decimite when
mites begin to reappear. In both cases, birds should not be
sprayed directly. This programme can be repeated once during
the crop cycle, should mites begin to reappear.
According to Lesley LeQuesne, by following a few simple guidelines
and using this rotational control programme, egg producers can
combat poultry red mite and minimise the damage caused by the
pest.
"The first thing when trying to combat the problem is to treat
the poultry house thoroughly and not to cut corners," she said.
"Pay particular attention to cracks and crevices and areas that
may harbour mites. Good hygiene during the crop cycle will help
reduce any build up of red mite, as will treating any problem
early. This attention to detail also means using the correct
amount of product as stated on the label".
"Following the rotational programme and these guidelines should
give control of poultry red mite for at least 12 weeks," she
concluded.

| STRICT
HYGIENE ESSENTIAL TO GUARD AGAINST NEW DISEASE RISKS |
|
The recent
outbreaks of PDNS (Porcine Dermatitis Nephropathy Syndrome)
and PMWS (Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome) in
the UK are raising concerns. Little evidence is available
to show how PDNS and PMWS are being transmitted. Therefore,
at the present time, the advice to farmers is to ensure that
a strict hygiene routine is in place at all times.
As
with all hygiene programmes, pig accommodation should be thoroughly
cleaned and disinfected before sows or piglets are transferred
to their new accommodation. Footdips for personnel's boots
and vehicle washing should also be included, this too will
help reduce the spread of disease around the farm.
Sorex'
Sorgene 5, the broad-spectrum disinfectant, that has full
MAFF approval and range of detergents (Sorgene High Foam and
Sorgene Farmclens) and are all the farmer needs to implement
an effective hygiene programme. Sorgene 5 is odourless in
use, fast acting and long lasting. It is proven to be highly
effective against a broad range of bacteria, viruses, including
Porcine parvovirus, and hard-to-kill fungal spores.
'Until
it is established how PDNS and PMWS are being transmitted
the advice to farmers is ensure that a good hygiene programme
is put in place around all areas of the farm to reduce the
spread of disease' says Sorex' marketing co-ordinator, Paula
Chatterton. 'Also, to help pig farmers Sorex has designed
a straight-forward, easy to follow, but effective hygiene
programme which is available from Sorex free of charge. Alternatively,
farmers can contact Sorex and obtain free expert advice on
implementing a hygiene routine'.
